发病的原因，多是由于肺脾肾气虚，而肺肾气虚又常以脾气虚所致。鼻为肺之窍，肺气虚则卫外不固，风寒之邪易犯，使鼻受病，风为阳邪，其性开泻，症见恶风，自汗，鼻痒流涕，寒为阴邪，易伤阳气，寒邪内舍于肺，或郁而化热，使肺气宣降失调故可见鼻塞流清涕或黄涕，并可见有气短、面色不华等症状。所以《灵枢，脉度篇》说：“肺通于鼻，肺和则鼻能知臭香炎”。
脾气虚脾阳不振，不能运化水谷精气，肾失所养则肾气不足，肾主纳气，肾虚则气不归元，阳气易于散发，气化失常，排泄受阻，水泛为痰，痰阻气机易伤于肺，所以由此可知发病的原因其本在于脾导致疾病发生的原因是多种多样的。
